PRESERVING FAMILIES
one home at a time
SECURE HOUSING. STRONGER FAMILIES.
Did you know a primary reason Haitian children are separated from their families is because of extreme poverty? For most parents, it starts with their inability to provide food and shelter.

A typical home in Southern Haiti houses between 5-6 family members and is made up of only one room. The roof is made of tin or tarp, the flooring is bare earth, the walls are rusted and there is no door for security. It’s no wonder parents believe the fallacy that their children will be better off in an orphanage than remaining under their care. But this is simply untrue.
WHY WE BUILD
At Overture, we believe family preservation is the first step towards empowering Haitians to become independent and self-sustaining. That’s why one of our top priorities is to prevent the separation of families; because strong families result in stronger communities. If we can keep a family unit together, we’re on the right track. And building new homes is one of the many ways we strive to do this.

Furthermore, every new home built leads to a working community, which strengthens the local economy. We empower the surrounding community by collaborating with local leadership, purchasing local supplies and hiring local community members to build the new home. And through the process, local crew members are able to support their families for a month while gaining hands-on experience that gives them skills toward gaining future employment.

BY HAITIANS, FOR HAITIANS
Since 2018, we’ve built homes in more than twenty-five communities throughout southern Haiti for families in crisis. And the positive impact to both families and their communities has been profound. These homes can house between 8-10 individuals and oftentimes, they become the go-to home for community gatherings. Made for all geographic areas, our traditional homes are disaster resilient and can withstand up to a category 3 hurricane.
